Artistic Web Development - Exploring techniques for visual expression in the Browser - Masterclass by Rafael Gonçalves

This Masterclass delves into possible bridges between Web Development and New Media Artistic practices. It aims to enhance participants’ computational literacy, fostering better dialogue between conceptualisation and production strategies.

The session will navigate through conceptual approaches emerging from computational landscapes, empowering participants to blend technical web development skills with artistic vision. Centred on the lecturer’s experience with browser-based media design and production, the masterclass will propose reflections on how we can express ourselves artistically through websites.

What are the expected outcomes?

To learn new ways of developing and exhibiting artistic practices online;

For non-developers: to learn how to identify a good web project and what to ask when hiring or collaborating with a web developer;

For developers: to learn different ways of showcasing artistic work and what to consider when working or collaborating with an artist.

What are the requirements?

A keen interest in learning new and exciting processes!

While previous knowledge is not required, a basic understanding of HTML, CSS, JS or web development is an advantage. The Masterclass will consider participants’ interests and needs.

This workshop will be held in English with Portuguese support.

Participants must be 16 or older.

Rafael Gonçalves is a designer and developer exploring the intersection of Digital Media and Graphic Design. He was the New Media Director of the Porto Design Biennale (2021) and worked on websites such as the Casa do Design, The Archive of Vibrant Matter, CEAU, Fala Atelier, Eden X, and more. Rafael teaches Digital Media Design, Web Development and Creative Coding at ESAD, exploring how designers and artists can co-create with and for Computational Media.
